One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

If you want to know what possibilities are open to a professional jazz player in Canada, look to Kirk MacDonald. If you want to study jazz, you might consider attending one of the lead- ing institutes where he’s taught for the last quarter century (University of Toronto, McGill, Humber). If you want to meet the upper crust of the international jazz world, take up with his collaborators: Claude Ranger, Rosemary Clooney, Sonny Greenwich, Kenny Wheeler, Jim McNeely, Vince Mendoza, Nancy Walker, Bernie Senensky, etc. If the opportu- nity arises, he might show you some of his awards: a JUNO, a few Jazz Report Awards and Canada Council’s Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award In Music, among others. Most importantly, if you want to hear true blue jazz at its finest, check out the Kirk MacDonald Quartet and witness impeccable bop compositions performed by contemporary Canadian masters.
